Reality Check

  • Claim:

Alexa voice control enabled universal remote (no smartphone is required)

  • Reality:

Technology adds up for SmartMote to functional properly, and is not alone as there are other similar products on the market, at a higher cost.

  • Claim:

    Affordable

  • Reality:

Affordability is relative, however, in comparison to other similar products, the SmartMote has a substantially lower price point.

  • Claim:

    Effective

  • Reality:

The SmartMote is designed with a 360 degree coverage. There are always limitations when dealing with point to point communication, so effectiveness here depends on placement, additional IR connectors, and other variables.

  • Claim:

    Seamless

  • Reality:

Ease of use is a beneficial element to any product. The SmartMote, however, does require a certain element of installation and set up.

  • Claim:

    Up to date

  • Reality:

The ability to add on features is a crucial element to the SmartMote campaign.

  • Claim:

    Secure

  • Reality:

Although security is intentionally thought of and planned for, in regards to the SmartMote, there are always risks to devices and security being compromised, especially when new companies potentially do not have the support to help in every scenario.

Bottom Line

SmartMote is a simple, yet potentially helpful element for the progression of a smart home. Keep in mind the SmartMote does not work with all smart devices at this point, but primarily Alexa. There are plans for future implementation of Google Home and other systems, but some integration will eventually be limited by the simple hardware of the SmartMote. Set up is required and security should be considered when thinking about backing SmartMote. Price point of the SmartMote is much lower than other "competitive" devices or systems.
