Reality Check

  • Claim:

The MDrill One microphone’s beautiful design and proprietary VERTIGAIN® Technology promise to record unparalleled, broadcast quality audio. MDrill will consistently record up to 10% more clearly and accurately than other USB microphones.

  • Reality:

MDrill One introduces a stylish aesthetic to the world of microphones that is new and exciting. Thronmax promises its VERTIGAIN® Technology will allow sound waves to be less scattered than typical mesh microphone grills, however because of the early prototype we were unable to fully hear the difference due to firmware that is still a work in progress. The word "promise" is a strong word that is sometimes dangerous to use, especially in the audio field which has high levels of technicality, yet the Thronmax team is confident in their product and back this up with the MDrill One. Take note that MDrill is making these claims specifically in the field of USB style, plug and play, type microphones. In regards to audio quality, the prototype that we tested (MDrill Zero) had some areas that were still being perfected. The Thronmax team addressed these issues with us initially prior to testing and assured us that this would be resolved before shipping the final product. Areas in progress included a slight distortion when close to the microphone and overall lack of precise clarity in comparison to quality one would be used to on a professional podcast. The USB microphone market, focused on streaming and ease of use, is still emerging as a whole and has room for growth, especially in the area of design, which the MDrill One is attempting to improve. In context of the transparency of the Thronmax team and the design quality, the audio improvements are believed to be potentially resolved upon shipping.

Something To Think About

In spending time with a prototype for the MDrill Zero, we noticed some distortion in close proximity, primarily in the cardioid setting. The team notified us of the issue prior to testing and is addressing the firmware issue for the final release.

  • Claim:

    Five Recording Modes

  • Reality:

The option for several modes for recording is a welcomed benefit of the MDrill One. In testing, the different recording modes operated as claimed and potentially can add versatility to the repertoire for the MDrill One Microphone.

  • Claim:

"the mic is simply plug & play."

  • Reality:

With no need for drivers or other elements to make the MDrill One work, the USB-C type connection is as claimed, plug and play.

  • Claim:

    Seven-Color RGB LED

  • Reality:

The LED addition is another straightforward element that adds style to function, and often missing in other competitive microphones.

  • Claim:

    Universal Mount

  • Reality:

The universal mount at the bottom of the MDrill series feels sturdy and allows for the possibility of a wide array of uses.

Bottom Line

MDrill One is a beautifully designed plug and play USB microphone that introduces features not typically seen on the majority of similar microphones on the market. The design, however, is currently more perfected than the recording quality that is still being fine tuned. In comparison with what the final product will be, there is a current gap in recorded quality that is being addressed. Slight distortion in close proximity to the MDrill microphone is also an issue that the very passionate and responsive team at Thronmax is working to resolve. The peripheral features of the MDrill One are solid and lead the industry by example with minimal style that looks good sitting on a desktop, on a conference table, or even gaming on the PS4. Because of the different functioning modes, the MDrill One is a microphone that has many potential uses for many different users. Once the recording quality catches up to the attractive style of design, the MDrill One Microphone is primed to be a new competitor to the recognizable names of the industry.
